GREEN HEART LOUISVILLE PROJECT RECEIVES NATIONAL MEDIA RECOGNITION!

We are thrilled to share the University of Louisville's Envirome Institute was featured on the TODAY Show for its groundbreaking clinical trails on the relationship between urban greenery and heart health.

Louisville's recent study has unveiled a promising discovery that could transform the way we think about our environment and its impact on our well-being. The first findings from the trial suggest living in tree-filled areas reduces the risk of heart disease by reducing inflammation by 20 percent. The study has also found lower levels of a blood marker associated with heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer compared with those who lived in more tree-bare neighborhoods.

The Green Heart HEAL Study has included planting over 8,000 trees and shrubs, and has enrolled hundreds of participants across six South Louisville neighborhoods. For the couple of years, researchers have collected information on baseline health measurements, medical history, stress and lifestyle factors, as well as blood and urine samples to assess for changes over time. The first statistical outcomes have been, without a doubt, heartening.

We are so proud to see Louisville on the map for pioneering and embodying a New Vision of Health. Please join us in congratulating the Envirome Institute efforts by circulating news of this major milestone!

SABBATH 1993 I

Poem by Wendell Berry || Poetry Film from Openground Mindfulness

No, no, there is no going back.
Less and less you are
that possibility you were.
More and more you have become
those lives and deaths
that have belonged to you.
You have become a sort of grave
containing much that was
and is no more in time, beloved
then, now, and always.
And so you have become a sort of tree
standing over a grave.
Now more than ever
you can be generous toward each day
that comes, young, to disappear
forever, and yet remain
unaging in the mind.
Every day you have less reason
not to give yourself away.

Water Water Everywhere:
Restoring the Ohio River Basin

"One of the most polluted watersheds in the U.S., the Ohio River basin has endured a sordid history of industrial fallout. A new effort—to restore the ecosystem, boost the economy and confront environmental injustices—sounds like an order as tall as the river is wide. But advocates say it’s possible, with a half-full outlook and unquenchable resolve."
Activities also include Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, and Workout Circuits!

The Louisville Metro Health Department created a dashboard based on the city's health equity report.

Mapping reveals the largest number of children younger than 6 years old who have high blood lead levels are in northwest Louisville. Disturbingly, children in this corridor of the city are more than nine times more likely than children from other neighborhoods to have elevated lead levels. In fact, between 2005 and 2021, 10,000 children tested positive for having elevated blood lead levels — 59% of those children were Black.

One child harmed is a community harmed, let alone a figure as staggering as 10,000 children.  This is why we must fight for a New Vision of Health day in and day out.
